Inflammatory bowel disease is a group of intestinal disorder that involves the chronic inflammation of the GI tract. There are two primary constituents of this disease: ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Because of its chronic and recurrent nature, patient education together with specialized treatment and follow up are essential in managing this group of disease. There is no standard regime. The therapeutic goal is often to improve the quality of life for the patient since there is yet no cure. This thesis will present an overview of inflammatory bowel diseases: their characters, etiologies, and pathogenesis, as well as a look at the various pharmacological therapies that are currently available.
