Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, EMDR, is a type of psychotherapy first described in 1987 by Francine Shapiro. Francine Shapiro, an American psychologist, is the originator and the developer of this psychotherapy. She first described its indication for trauma patients, but after multiple studies it was proven to have an impact on many more disorders. The mechanism of action of EMDR is not totally understood. It was first believed that the eye movements are behind its efficacy. But later, it was discovered that not only the eye movements, but the bilateral alternating sensorial stimulation helps to process the traumatic memories. EMDR has a precise protocol for all its indications, which is detailed in this review. We will also go through its contraindications, its side-effects, its new targets; as well as the new treatment under research for patients victims of traumatic events.hu_HU
