The local delivery of antibiotics in the treatment of osteomyelitis has been used safely and effectively for decades. Over the past 30 years the main treatment in this application has been polymethylmethacrylate antibiotic beads, but due to its non-biodegradability and requirement for finding a second surgery for removal of antibiotic beads an ongoing development for finding a more advantages delivery system has been taking place. Through the discussion on the PMMa beads and their action we shall review the newest developments on local delivery systems of antibiotics in osteomyelitis.
