This thesis deals with LOVE (SZERELEM) metaphors in English and Hungarian by focusing on the recurring theme among linguists: the cognitive theory of metaphors. The main purpose of this paper is to provide essential information about how the metaphors LOVE IS A JOURNEY and LOVE IS WAR comprise the features of conceptual metaphors and how these features appear in their linguistic manifestations. After demonstrating the different approaches to the study of metaphor, the structure of conceptual metaphors was highlighted with examples. In the main part of the thesis, the similarity between LOVE IS A JOURNEY (A SZERELEM UTAZÁS) and LOVE IS WAR (A SZERELEM HÁBORÚ) was represented by examples from both languages. Furthermore, the salutation of lovers was illustrated through examples from English and Hungarian. In the final part, the container-schema in LOVE (SZERELEM) metaphors was exemplified. Based on the cognitive theory of metaphors, certain similar aspects of the English and Hungarian language were proved by the conceptual metaphors (LOVE IS A JOURNEY and LOVE IS WAR) and their linguistic manifestations in English and Hungarian.hu_HU
