Living in a small country in the heart of Europe raises the question of whether or not we will be able to save our national identity or will assimilate into the globalised world. The Hungarian government is working on its new project the purpose of which is to save our old values. Today’s society is continuously creating new opportunities and values but the real challenge is to save the old values and pass them on to future generations. One of the most critical elements of a nation’s identity is its language. Marai, during his exile, writes about his deep concerns about losing his mother tongue (Hites, 2012). Being teacher of English at Pal Gonczy Bilingual Primary School, the slow disappearance of our native language is of major importance for me. In this paper I intend to take a closer look at bilingual education and its role in supporting the development of national identity.
