My thesis aims to analyze the construct of different types of defense mechanisms, also known as escapism, in Martin Scorsese's film adaptation of Shutter Island by exploring the protagonist's persona and what symbols represent this psychological notion in the movie. With respect to the Freudian psychoanalytical concept, my thesis elaborates on both the theoretical background of escapism and how the main character's personality can be illustrated through the symbols of water and fire.hu_HU
