The aim of anaesthesia is to maximize the positive outcome of surgical interventions while decreasing the burden on the patient. Total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) is a general anaesthetic technique that only administers a combination of medications intravenously, without the use of inhalation agents. The gravid mother and foetus go through a series of physiological and pharmacological changes which causes pharmacons to have different effects. This comes with a need for modification of drug combinations and dosage depending on the effect. As there are two patients in obstetrics, the effect of the anaesthetic on both the parturient and foetus have to be considered.
