Positive Inotropic Drugs are drugs that work by increasing the strength of the heart contraction. They are used in conditions where the heart cannot pump enough blood to the rest of the body like in systolic Heart Failure. The most common cause of systolic Heart failure is ischemic heart disease. Some examples of positive inotropes are cardiac glycosides, phosphodiesterase inhibitors, dobutamine, dopamine and norepinephrine. These drugs lead to the increase in stroke volume and cardiac output. Positive Inotropes should be avoided in ventricular outflow obstruction because it can lead to further deterioration of the patients case.
