dc.description.abstractIn my thesis, I aim to delve deeper into Susan Hill's literary contributions by analyzing two of her novels, The Woman in Black and I’m the King of the Castle. Through this exploration, I seek to examine Hill's ability to blend traditional gothic elements to depict the anxieties and dilemmas confronted by her characters. Central to my analysis are themes as isolation and the consequences of physical and psychological trauma. I intend to investigate the interplay between natural elements, the symbolic significance of the manors, and the characters' traumas, emphasizing their connection. Specifically, my focus lies on examining how characters engage with nature and how their unique perspectives shape their interpretation of shared experiences. I will explore the significance of the manors, Warings and Eel Marsh House, as typical gothic symbols that influence the emotions of the characters and serve as focal points for dealing with their haunting pasts. I aim to illustrate how the characters' identities and relationships develop through their journey of facing these memories
