Ischemia can lead to irreversible tissue damage and is also known to be a contributing factor to the development of several cardiovascular diseases; hence reperfusion is needed as soon as possible to prevent the damage or changes from becoming irreversible. A problem that arises from this, is the extra damage that occurs in patients after reperfusion. This paper aims to shed some light on N, N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) a hallucinogen which has been shown to exert protective effects on several tissues after ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) event by acting on a chaperone protein known as the sigma-1 Receptor. Thus, DMT possesses therapeutic potential regarding ischemic pathologies.
