Americans’ attitude towards nature has been a central notion in American Studies pertaining to the question how industrial progress and along with it the destruction of the natural environment were possibly compatible with the ideal of sublime wilderness. From the historical point of view, Americans in general altered their approach toward the notion of nature. It was the 19th century which brought a significant turning point in this regard, when, as a consequence of some conceptual influences, Americans had begun to appreciate nature more than they used to during the preceding centuries. The aim of this paper is to present one of these major cultural turning points and introduce the life and career of environmentalist and landscape designer, Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. who arrived to the appreciation of nature’s beauty and this way could affect change in the way people thought of nature.------ Az Amerikai Tudományokban mindig is fontos szerepet játszott az amerikai emberek természethez való hozzáállásának tanulmányozása, azon belül is az, hogy az iparosodás milyen negatív hatásokkal volt a természetre és annak megítélésére. Az évszázadok múltán megváltozott ez a hozzáállás, ugyanis a 19. században többféle behatás érkezett Amerikába főként Európából. Ennek következtében ez az új irányzat lassan beivódott az amerikai tudatba és elkezdték értékelni a természet nyújtotta szépségeket. Ezen szakdolgozat célja tehát, hogy bemutassa ezt a fordulópontot és a korszak egyik legfontosabb karakterét, Frederick Law Olmsted életét és karrierjét, aki példájával örökre megváltoztatta az amerikaiak természethez való hozzáállását.
