An extraction is a critical stage in orthodontics, as it creates space for the teeth to align correctly and enhances the facial appearance. This procedure is often necessary when there is severe crowding, dentoalveolar discrepancies and protrusion. First premolars are most commonly extracted because they provide sufficient space for alignment while minimizing negative effects on facial aesthetics. In certain cases, molars, incisors or canines may also be extracted depending on anatomical, functional and aesthetic considerations.
