In general anxiety disorders are the most widespread mental health conditions, impacting millions of people across the globe. Numerous factors including genetic, environmental and neurobiological dysregulation have been proposed as potential contributors to the pathophysiology of this disease. While psychotherapy remains an important part of the treatment, pharmacological treatments play a main role in treating moderate and severe cases. The primary treatment for GAD consists of SSRIs(selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and SNRIs (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) which demonstrate efficacy in reducing anxiety with low risk of serious side effects. In addition, benzodiazepines, TCAs, pregabalin and certain atypical antipsychotics may be used in specific cases.
