In order to be able to comprehend the several aspects of the, as one will see later, quite complex belief systems and conceptualizations about the world of the North American Indians, it is essential to be acquainted with the historical background of the given tribes,since these events must have contributed significantly to the development of their present cultures. For that very reason, the focus is going to be on the most prominent events and facts of the mentioned tribes in the next part of the paper. As a starting point of my study, I am going to reveal the history of the Cherokee first. Following this, my main concern is going to be to point out the distinctive characteristics of Navajo history, setting the direction of my investigation proceeding from East to the West.
