In recent decades, with the advancement of the medical field, there is a global trend of longer life expectancy. This trend encompasses a higher number of Alzheimer’s disease patients which increases the burden on medical care systems. With the insufficient understanding about the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s disease, the current pharmacological therapy of Alzheimer’s disease is incomplete.

The Written thesis intends to explain the current view about the pathology, symptoms, risk factors and diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and review the pharmacological therapy for Alzheimer's disease. The current treatment options include acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, NMDA receptor antagonist, phosphodiesterase inhibitors and biological treatments. In addition to the current treatments, the thesis presents the current developments and future options for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
