This thesis reviews the role of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in the management of both epileptic and non-seizure disorders. It outlines the pathophysiology of epilepsy, the mechanisms of action of major AEDs, and the principles guiding their clinical use. The thesis also examines the expanding therapeutic applications of AEDs in conditions such as neuropathic pain, migraine, essential tremor, spasticity, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia. Particular emphasis is placed on how modulation of ion channels and neurotransmitter systems contributes to their efficacy across multiple neurological and psychiatric conditions. Finally, the benefits, limitations, adverse effects, and clinically relevant drug interactions associated with these medications are discussed.
