Pregnancy of Unknown Location (PUL) is a condition in which a woman presents with a positive pregnancy test (often a serum hCG test), but pregnancy cannot be detected or proven with Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVS). This thesis aims to briefly review aspects of PUL, including its definition, incidence, etiology, risk factors, and diagnostic and possible management plans for patients with this condition. The main goal in managing patients with Pregnancy of Unknown Location is to risk-stratify them into low-risk and high-risk groups. Serum hCG and progesterone levels are two crucial markers that have been utilized to achieve this goal with high sensitivity as well as specificity. Based on these markers and real-time imaging, advanced models (M4, M6) and clinical decision-supporting systems have been developed, enhancing physicians' diagnostic performance during the diagnostic process and reducing patient visits. Management with either methotrexate, surgical procedures, or wait-and-see method are proposed based on the patient’s clinical status, risk of complications, and patient’s choice after being consulted thoroughly. With the advancement of medicine, further studies and development of biomarkers as well as diagnostic methods are being conducted with promising potential.
