This essay will focus on five respective First Ladies: Martha Washington, Mary Todd Lincoln, Lucy Hayes, Edith Wilson and Eleanor Roosevelt. These ladies represent different periods of the American political life and in the thesis one can read about the following First Ladies: Starting the Journey with Martha Washington, the New-fangled Generation: the 1830-s with Mary Todd Lincoln, the New Woman with Lucy Hayes, 20th Century Reformer with Edith Wilson and finally, the Change- Eleanor Roosevelt. The emphasis is put on their achievements in the sociopolitical field regarding their charitable activities, war efforts, and social role, while briefly presenting their reputation in the news and how they defined themselves as First Ladies as a political institution.
