The aim of my thesis is to analyze the situation of women in late Victorian Britain, more precisely in the last two decades of the nineteenth century, concentrating on the figure of the New Woman. I believe the fin de siècle is a very important period if we want to understand the development that women in general went through until they reached their present state of more or less equality with men. It was in the last two decades of the nineteenth century when women made the first step in order to break free from the conventions that society imposed on them, and as a result what we consider today the feminist movement could begin. This period is full of obstacles to a woman who is not satisfied with being closed to the private sphere of the home, who is not willing to accept that she is the property of the husband, who does not see marriage as the only possibility to happiness, who wants to have the opportunity to study at university, to get a degree and after it a normal job.hu_HU
