dc.description.abstractDairy sub-sector is of great significance to the Kenyan economy contributing approximately 6.8% to GDP from agriculture as well as providing livelihoods to over a third of the rural households. The industry is however faced by a myriad of challenges largely being profitability challenges. The study involved assessing the economic feasibility of milk processing plant investment in mathira west sub-county - central Kenya - that would increase the producer prices of milk. The study applied investment analysis methodology, using DCF (Discounted Cash Flow) method which is an evaluation method used to estimate the value of an investment based on its future cash flows through estimating the hitherto value of a company, based on projections of how much money it will generate in the future. The indicators used were Net Present Value (NPV), Profitability Index (PI), Discounted Payback Period (DPP) and Internal Rate of Return. The study concluded that Mathira West sub-county can sustainably run an economically viable milk processing plant with a capacity of 25,000 litres per day. Efforts should however be made to ensure increased proportion of the higher value products especially yoghurt and cheese by promoting local consumption as well as opening new export markets for better economics.hu_HU
