Millions of people worldwide are afflicted by atopic dermatitis (AD), a common chronic inflammatory skin disease with an unpredictable clinical course. While traditional treatments have been effective for some patients, there is a need for new therapies that can provide greater relief and improve quality of life. As our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of atopic dermatitis continues to evolve, in recent days, different classes of new drugs were invented. Some are still under investigation but few already got FDA approval and been made available to the public. This article will start with introduction followed by etiology, pathophysiology, current treatments and finally focusing on new emerging treatments of AD with an emphasis on their mechanisms of action, efficacy, side effects and future prospects.
