| dc.description.abstract | When thinking about the treatment of PCOS, physicians really must look at the overall picture, deeply considering the lifestyle modifications, the pharmacological and surgical treatments and applying them as they should be. The lifestyle modifications should always be applied as best as it should to everyone going through PCOS, this is because the lifestyle modifications alone can bring about a state where there are no manifesting symptoms, this means proper education of the patient and follow up should be done to ensure the continuity and improvement of lifestyle choices. Pharmacological treatments should be seen as an added measure of treatment to the already modified lifestyle changes, when considering the pharmacotherapy, drugs that regulate insulin and glucose are highly effective, these drugs include the likes of metformin GLP-1 agonists, DPP 4 inhibitors, SGLT2 inhibitors and Myoinositol, but we also need some hormone regulating drugs like combined oral contraceptives, due to our desire to also treat infertility we can make use of drugs like thiazolidines aromatase inhibitors, and clomiphene. With surgery we can also achieve weight loss through bariatric surgery, we can increase the chances of giving birth by utilizing IVF. Even though there is no direct cure for PCOS, with the proper application of these therapies it is possible to live a symptom free life. | |
