In my thesis I intend to examine the various gender-based differences in compliment behavior patters. In the first part of my thesis I review the critical literature about genderbased differences in general and introduce Brown and Levinson’s concept of politeness. Furthermore, in the second chapter, I intend to shed light to the fundamental notions of complimenting. In the course of the review, I wish to highlight those main points and criteria that will function as a basis for my own survey. In the final chapters, I will demonstrate the validity of the criteria listed in previous part of the thesis through my own small-scale survey on the compliment response patters of native Hungarian speakers both in English and Hungarian.hu_HU
