dc.description.abstractHow did one of the most valuable colonies in the world become one of the most poverty-stricken nations on the planet? In this paper, we first highlighted the modernization theory and the stages of economic growth followed by the limitations of this economic theory. Next the Human Development Index was introduced to the paper and the various indicators of the HDI were discussed in relation to Haiti. The Historical background provided some key information of the issues affecting the economic development of Haiti. The issues were categorized by challenges caused by Revolutions, Foreign Occupations, and Nature. The challenges to the current Haitian government were also highlighted next.
