My thesis explores the familial emotions and relations in the Graham family in the film Hereditary directed by Ari Aster. I argue that most of the emotions and relations in the family are corrupted or broken, due to the many traumas, either transgenerational, collective, or individual, which the family, especially the mother figure, experienced over the years. The focus of my thesis rests on motherhood, its ambivalence, and its corruption by an oppressive patriarchal society, where motherhood does not exist as a natural experience of women, but as a patriarchal institution, which is illustrated in the film through the demonic cult of Paimon where the members of the family become playthings of both Paimon and society.hu_HU
