Miért éppen Dóczy Andrásra esett a választása? Megvoltak-e a feltételek annak véghezvitelére? Szatmár vára elsősorban a Magyar Királyságtól elszakadt Erdély felől védte a megmaradt országrészt, ezért tartjuk fontosnak a tárgyalt korszakban az Erdélyi Fejedelemséggel ápolt viszonyának részletesebb bemutatását. Felvetődik tehát a kérdés, hogyan működtek együtt a várláncolat különböző erősségei? / My primary objective is to present the history of Szatmár Castle as the center of the Szatmár Captaincy, and to reconstruct the period of András Dóczy of Nagylúcse’s career between 1607 and 1619 based on sources related to his appointments as royal commissioner in Kassa, captain-general of Szatmár, and captain-general of Upper Hungary. Another aim of this thesis is to find answers to questions that arise in the course of exploring the topic. Why was the possession of the Szatmár castle of such paramount importance? What conditions did the monarch impose on the candidate for the title of Captain-General of Szatmár? Why did the choice fall specifically on András Dóczy? What were the aspirations of the Viennese court regarding the expulsion of the Turks and the unification of the country? Were the conditions in place to carry this out? The primary system of border defense in the 16th and 17th centuries was a chain of castles and fortresses. The captain-general of Szatmár or Trans-Tisza at the time was responsible not only for the defense of Szatmár Castle and its immediate surroundings, but also for the neighboring fortresses connected to it. Szatmár Castle primarily defended the remaining part of the country from Transylvania, which had seceded from the Kingdom of Hungary; for this reason, we consider it important to provide a more detailed account of its relationship with the Principality of Transylvania during the period in question. During the tenure of Royal Commissioner András Dóczy and his governorship of Szatmár, three princes ruled Transylvania: Zsigmond Rákóczi for one year, Gábor Báthory for five, and Gábor Bethlen for six years, until the end of András Dóczy’s term. We sought answers, among other things, to the question of what kind of relationship the captain-general himself had with the Transylvanian princes? The main strongholds of the Szatmár captaincy, which fell under the Upper Hungarian captaincy of Kassa, also included Tokaj, Kálló, and Ecsed, among others. This raises the question: how did the various strongholds in the chain of castles cooperate? How did communication function between the captains of the subordinate castles and the captain-general? To what extent did the captain-general’s authority extend to the subordinate strongholds? Was there a mandatory service route, and did the captains adhere to it? Given its subject matter, this thesis cannot avoid—indeed, it requires—a more thorough examination of the role of the hajdúság during these years. The social roots of the hajdús began to take shape precisely during this period, and András Dóczy, as a high-ranking military officer, encountered the problems associated with this on a daily basis. This is precisely why I considered it important to examine the hajdú issue from the perspective of a Catholic nobleman and military officer as well. In writing this paper, we also sought answers to the following questions: What political processes led to the indispensable military role of the free hajduks, how did they adapt to social expectations? To what extent did the hajduks, as a military force, influence events?
