Endodontic procedures are intricate and require high levels of skill, experience and patience. Laser technology in endodontics has been a forefront of research in recent times and has intrigued many on how we can apply it to everyday health care for ease of use. Erbium and neodymium YAG lasers have been primarily studied as the choice of lasers for root canal irrigation given their intricate properties making them suitable for the procedure. Laser activated irrigation (LAI) is deemed a more efficient way of carrying out endodontic procedures, both in terms of time and prognosis of the treatment. Although LAI alone doesn’t seem to have a hugely significant effect on treatment success as compared to traditional syringe irrigation, when LAI is used in congruence with activating agents and irrigation solutions like NaOCl, it tends to show drastic improvement in overall results over traditional syringe irrigation techniques, and this is seen apparent by an overall improvement in the patient’s postoperative quality of life and a reduction in complaints.
