Absztrakt

Among numerous historical and cultural allusions, E.M. Forster’s A Room with a View abounds in references to fine art and classical music pieces. On the one hand, these heighten the authenticity of the fictional atmosphere concerning the Italian, more particularly Florentine cultural milieu. On the other hand, they are introduced in order to expand the interpretative potential of the characters. The art works of various genres have a close relationship to people, since the deeds and ideas of the figures are often supported by and/or reflected in the artefacts concerned. Owing to the employment of fine art pieces in the narrative, Forster not only exploits the potentials of art to merely characterise his figures but he uses this means for a psychological depiction of them and opens up the inner spheres of characters.
