In this thesis I would like to take a closer look at the way South-Asian Indians live in the United States of America, why they move to this country, what it means for them to live in a totally different culture, what kind of goals they want to achieve living there. However, my main point is to scrutinize the theme of the generational gap between the first generation of Indians who moved to the States and their off springs, the second generation and the identity crisis of the second generation that results from this gap. In my thesis I would like to take a closer look at the huge gap between two generations who have the same roots, origins but still they live a totally different life and have totally different ways of looking at the world around them. This gap and the parents’ and their children’s different ways of thinking and experiencing their new homeland results in the second generation’s identity crisis. Jhumpa Lahiri’s world famous novel, The Namesake and her popular short story collection, The Interpreter of Maladies give us a very interesting and significant insight into the life of Indian-Americans.
