This essay intends to reinforce a rather rare argument about the effectiveness and role of the Allied naval blockade of Imperial Germany during the Great War. Traditional researchers mostly preferred to examine the history and structure of the blockade and while both are indispensable parts of the conversation, it is imperative to investigate the economic changes it had forced upon the Second Reich. Another topos of the history writing of the blockade is the relative insignificance of it in conceiving the ultimate victory in the war. Indeed, historians so far have been guilty of quickly brushing off the role the Royal Navy played in defeating the Central Powers, preferring to emphasize the contributions of the British Army instead. The lack of a decisive, Trafalgar-esque fleet battle and the rather uneventful, passive blockade did not pave the way for the eventual glory of the navy in the memory of the nation. Finally, the paper aims to do away with a common misconception, namely that the British blockade can be made accountable for the then existing hunger in Germany. Albeit not exactly self-sufficient in the production of foodstuffs, and some elements, like animal fats were clearly missing because of the lack of international trade, the starvation present especially in the bigger urban areas can be attributed to the agricultural sector’s lagging behind in terms of a restructuring of the workforce. To reach a conclusion, the essay explores the planning, setting up, malfunctioning and the tightening of the blockade, how the German economy was altered to respond to the new demands and finally what steps were made to circumvent and break the deadlock. Hopefully, a well-balanced argument can be presented about the essential significance of the naval efforts in defeating the German Empire in World War 1.
