dc.description.abstractThis thesis deals with the available treatments for autoimmune diseases and presents the most recent developments in this field. It discussed are the challenges presented to clinicians when choosing the optimal treatment for the individual patient according to the disease characteristics and co-morbidities. It presents the more broadly based treatment, as well as the more specific, recently developed drugs that have changed this field. These drugs include NSAIDs, corticosteroids and different disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs; their effects, clinical indications and side effects are discussed. SLE is given, in this thesis, as an example of a specific autoimmune disease in order to demonstrate how different components of this broad term of autoimmune diseases manifest in a specific disease.
