The Representation of African-Americans on Screen: Stereotypical Images in Four Contemporary Movies
Absztrakt
My thesis discusess the stereotypical African-American images in contemporary American movies. Unforunately, there are a lot more negative images about black people in the media than positive ones; consequently, my claim is that stereotyping affects society's way of thinking about African-Americans. One of the most common forms of representation of black people is to place them in a white society as the servants, maids and butlers. The other method, which will also be analyzed, is the portrayal of black people as violent, drug-user criminals. As media present African-American people mostly in a negative way, people have false images of them; and these stereotypical characters may create wrong impressions in people’s mind. In my thesis, I am going to analyze these negative African-American stereotypes through four contemporary movies: The Help (2011), The Butler (2013), Boyz N the Hood (1991) and Moonlight (2016).
