Type 2 diabetes mellitus, also known as adult-onset diabetes mellitus or insulin independent diabetes, is a metabolic disorder with impaired regulation of glucose often with insulin resistance and relatively low insulin secretion. Amylin analogues such as pramlintide resembles the hormone amylin that is normally secreted with insulin from the pancreas. In type 2 diabetes, amylin level is often lower than usual. Amylin analogues will help lowering the glucagon during a meal and slows emptying the stomach. Thiazolidinediones (TZD) also known as glitazones are PPAR-gamma (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors-gamma) agonists. PPAR-gamma is a nuclear receptor that eventually leads to increase in insulin sensitivity.
