dc.description.abstractOne of the most challenging insect pests that affects potato yield in the north hemisphere is Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata). Due to intensive use of insecticides for its control the insect has developed resistance to at least 56 different insecticides compounds. In contrast alternative control methos have been proposed. Some of them are disorientation of the adult by masking potato volatile organic compounds (VOC) and using plant extracts. The objective of the present study was to investigate the feeding behavior of Colorado potato beetle in presence of tannic compounds for 72 hours by making a choice bioassay to measure the deterrent effect of tannin compounds. Four different leaves, three of them coated with three different concentrations of tannins (0.5 %; 0.75 %, and 1 %) and one coated only with water was offered to 10 adults to see their preference (there were prepared five repetitions). The bioassay showed that, there is a clear change in the feeding behavior of Colorado potato beetle when leaves are coated with tannin compound, but its effect apparently is more important during the first 24 hour. This conduct probably was due to an effect of a pre-ingestive deterrence or because tannins masked the VOC odors of the plant preventing its location.hu_HU
