Asthma is a disease that affects approximately 300 million patients worldwide. As with any chronic obstructive lung disease, asthma is characterized by chronic airway inflammation described in conjunction with multiple respiratory symptoms such as dyspnea, tightness of chest, and coughing with limitation of expiratory airflow, leading to expiratory wheezing. The aim of treatment of asthma is reasonable symptom control and ensuring daily activity levels, as well as decreasing the rate of exacerbation, persistent airflow limitation, and risk of side effects. These aims are pharmacologically achieved by controller and reliever therapies. Controller therapy is in an active loop of evaluation of asthma, adjustment of treatment and monitoring of response. Reliever treatments aim to reduce the airway obstruction in the acute setting to reduce symptoms for the patient. The effectiveness of the treatment depends on doctor-patient cooperation, patient compliance, and correct usage of inhalers. This meta-analysis aims to compile evidence for the use of GINA guidelines and stepwise treatment approach in clinical settings while reviewing pharmacological agents.
