This thesis describes the Gulf of Tonkin Incident of August 4, 1964 and the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.The release of declassified information, documents by the NSA in 2005, Robert Hanyok’s research, and the statements, confessions of ex-U.S. officials, such as Robert McNamara, or Daniel Ellsberg, put the events of August 4-5, 1964 into a new perspective, and revised one’s interpretation of the Gulf of Tonkin Incident and Resolution President Lyndon B. Johnson and his top aides falsely informed the American public and Congress about the incident.The president deceived the nation, and used the resolution to further escalate the war in 1965.
