Michael Ondaatje in his novel entitled The English Patient embraces the life story of a Hungarian nobleman, Count Ladislaus de Almásy. The 20th century desert explorer Almásy appears in front of us, in medias res, in an Italian villa as he is being looked after by the Canadian nurse Hana until his coming death. He is seriously injured as a result of his plane crash, and burned beyond recognition that makes him completely unidentifiable. Therefore, he is simply referred to as the English patient. For a long time almost nothing is revealed about him and his past, not even his identity, but later on his life story emerges from the fragments provided throughout the novel, and a man with a complex, fascinating personality appears in front of us. Through looking deeper into and analyzing the personality of the English patient I intend to uncover the components of László Almásy’s enigmatic character as well as to try to explain the processes having taken place in his past, where possible, that might have created his intriguing personality.hu_HU
