This thesis reviews some of the new biological treatments used in multiple myeloma therapy and those currently developed. To understand the use of a drug in disease, the pathophysiology, inner workings and host individuality (e.g., race and age) and environment cannot be ignored. Biological treatment or therapy refers to the use of elements usually of living organism origin to treat a disease (in this case, multiple myeloma). In simple terms, these treatments can either stimulate or repress the host immune system to aid or enhance the body's ability to fight off the disease, this could be done by either killing the cells, e.g., lysis or inhibiting the tumour cell growth. Although multiple myeloma is still seen as an incurable disease, several ongoing clinical trials have had promising results. Therapies of biological nature are being experimented with based on their synergistic effects when used in combination, the toxicities of such combinations however, are cautionary and are taking into consideration in their administration.hu_HU
