Mocsáry Béláné Fáy Mária is regarded to be the first female travel writer of Hungary.1 She was outstanding in many respects, as I am going to explain later, and her travelogues cannot be compared to those of other Hungarian travel writers because she was exceptional in her way of writing. Fáy Mária is an intriguing person to write about because she was a pioneering figure. No other woman before her ever tried to conquer far away places all by herself from Hungary. Most probably those who are familiar with the related and detailed history of Hungary and the United States of America know who she is, but to other people her achievements are still unknown. This is why I am writing about her. My aim in this thesis is to analyze her travelogue about the United States with regard to the issue of gender and demonstrate the unique characteristics of her writings by comparing her travelogue to other travel accounts. With thorough examination, I will discuss whether she wrote in a unique way because she was a female writer or the reason for the unique style was not gender specific.hu_HU
