Cyberpunk was a subgenre of science fiction that emerged in the 1980s characterized by a technologically advanced future of transhumanism in which cybernetics and cyberspace, genetic engineering, and artificial intelligence were ubiquitous. Since the 1980s women gained more agency over the cyberpunk genre and they desired to prove that cyberpunk is capable of becoming a crucial tool for feminist theory, which lead to the creation of the subgenre called Feminist cyberpunk. Femininity in cyberpunk cinema however appeared to be a complex and multifaceted topic as well. Unconstrained or unrestricted femininity devotes the overall free construction of female self-identification which is a very important notion of the modern feminist theory. This paper will analyze how unconstrained femininity evolves with high technology (body modification), what socio-cultural aspects (the question of race and gender, their perception and representation, interpersonal relations between the sexes) appear in Horizons (2006) and Alita: Battle Angel (2019), and how they fit into the feminist theory.
