Contacts between Hungary and England were rare before the 19th century as for Hungarians England remained terra incognita, an unknown land. Anglo-Hungarian diplomatic relations began at the time of Sigismund of Luxemburg (1387-1437), but we hardly speak of real culture contacts between the two European Christian countries until the second half of the 16th century. Hungarian pilgrims and students occasionally turned up in Oxford. One of them was Nicolaus de Hungaria, a scholar, maintained by Richard I, Coeur de Lion (1157-99). George Gömöri, professor of University of Cambridge writes about more than twenty other students, ministers and pilgrims who visited the universities in Oxford and Cambridge from 1571 to 1694. Their interests and preoccupations were different. They sought for profit either in a cultural or in a religious sense. First, they wanted to visit the two famous English universities and some of them were interested in the organization and practices of the Church of England. Others were open to puritan doctrines and “tried to further the cause of ecclesiastical reform in their native country”. (Gömöri 32) The first Hungarian visitor from that period was Máté Skaricza from Ráckeve, who visited England in the autumn of 1571 as part of his three-year long tour of Europe.hu_HU
