| dc.description.abstract | The Last of Us Part II (2020) is an AAA survival horror video game that presents players with portrayals of LGBTQ+ characters and storylines, as well as nonconventional depictions of gender identity and expression. This thesis presents an analysis of how queerness and queer-esque features of characters such as Ellie, Dina, Abby, and Lev are experienced in a post-apocalyptic world, while also examining how other characters in their communities perceive them in relation to their sexual or gender identity. Moreover, this paper explores queer identity in the game by attentively observing the game’s narrative and environment that the characters interact with each other in. It is also demonstrated that queer characters are still exposed to exclusionary behaviors due to conflicts that are based on the topic of identity between different generations, for this reason the thesis suggests that The Last of Us Part II’s narrative universe and its post-apocalyptic setting allows for a critical utopian reading of the game. | |
