dc.description.abstractThe number of patients being hospitalized for acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) is growing in the United States. The increasing prevalence of heart failure is due to an increased number of older individuals, as well as improved treatment for coronary artery disease that have allowed patients with cardiovascular disease to live longer. Rapid diagnosis and therapeutic interventions are necessary to prevent progression into cardiogenic shock. The main goals in the treatment for a hospitalized patient with heart failure is to establish euvolemia and to reduce the likelihood of the patient suffering from an adverse event. Decreasing congestion, reducing the afterload and neurohormonal activation to achieve stable hemodynamics and diminish symptoms are also the aims in treatment. Some of the common treatments used include vasodilators, inotropic agents and intravenous diuretics. This review summarizes the methods of treatment for patients with acute decompensated heart failure.
