Early childhood caries (ECC) is a severe global health issue caused by bacteria and dietary sugars that rapidly deteriorate the vulnerable enamel of primary teeth. To combat this, minimal intervention dentistry (MID) offers a conservative alternative to traditional "drill and fill" techniques by focusing on the "5Rs": recognition, re-orientation, remineralization, repair, and review. This approach utilizes non-invasive treatments like fluoride varnishes and resin infiltration to arrest early lesions, alongside tissue-preserving techniques like the Hall technique when restorations are required. Furthermore, MID relies on bioactive materials, such as glass-ionomer cements, which release fluoride to actively support the natural repair of the tooth. Ultimately, this collaborative approach achieves clinical success comparable to conventional methods while significantly reducing child anxiety and fostering lifelong positive oral health habits.
