| dc.description.abstract | The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree and intensity of heavy metal pollution in Bangladesh's roadside surface soil and tree leaves in both urban and rural locations. Roadside topsoil and tree leaves specimens were collected from 31 locations of the Dhaka South City Corporation and from the 8 locations of the Lohagara sub-district, Narail, Bangladesh in February 2022. The rural area was selected to investigate the distribution of heavy metals to the countryside. Three species of roadside perennial trees (Ficus benghalensis, Swietenia macrophylla, and Polyalthia longifolia) were chosen based on accessibility and abundance. Al, Mn, Zn, Ba, Pb, Cr, Cu, Ni, Co, and Cd were analyzed in roadside soils and tree leaves using ICP-OES5110 Agilent Technologies. Cadmium was found the main source of ecological risk in all the area (Er>160). The Cd was found responsible for more than 70% of the ecological risk. In this study we found that all the studied three species (Ficus benghalensis, Polyalthia longifolia and Swietenia macrophylla) were good for bioaccumulation of all the metals, none of them were hyperaccumulators. The single pollution by Cd was found in the rural area. It is likely because of vegetables and rice productions. However, the single Cd pollution in the rural area which is far from industrial and high traffic emission, also raised a question whether Bangladesh's soil and vegetation naturally contain high levels of Cd like arsenic. | |
