Oral contraceptives are overall a safe, low cost option for contraception. They can also be used for symptomatic relief of gynaecological diseases. It is however important to educate women and doctors not only of the benefits of oral contraceptives but also the risks, including an increase in relative risk of breast cancer, venous thrombosis and their link to adverse mood effects.
