American Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study, being cultivated in different ways from one place to another. Depending on the profile of the institution (available scholars, tradition of education in a certain field), American Studies programs vary. The paper will demonstrate this variety through the analysis of two Master‟s programs in American Studies. The Transatlantic Studies Master‟s program at Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca is centered around sociological courses (civilization, economy, law, transatlantic relations), while the North American Studies Master‟s program at the University of Debrecen is more based in letters (literature, history). The paper analyzes the reasons why these structures could have been formed and how these two approaches to the discipline lead to the same qualifications. The research will be based on personal experience and up-to-date program descriptions with prominent researchers interviewed about the past, present and possible future of the discipline. By way of showing the landscape concerning the availability of American Studies Master‟s programs in Eastern and Central Europe, a brief overview of our region will be included in the thesis.
