Absztrakt

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a relatively rare but serious and chronic complication of radiation therapy that is used in the treatment of cancer. It manifests as irradiated bone becoming necrotic, forming a chronic unhealing wound. ORN can have dire consequences on the quality of the life of the person who suffers from it. ORN can theoretically occur in irradiated bone throughout the body, but the most reported and researched area is in the mandible. Once ORN is recognized, it is irreversible and difficult to treat, hence preventive measures should be implemented strictly, especially since its risk factors are well known. Dentists together with other multidisciplinary health care professionals play a critical role in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of ORN in the jaws.
