The purpose of this thesis is to explore and describe how opposing ideologies can affect pro-life and pro-choice speakers' preferences for certain words and expressions in the abortion debate. In favour of providing the pro-life and pro-choice groups with a new, improved set of expressions both parties can deem appropriate, the research used data collected from a questionnaire and the analysis of its results. The research was carried out on 39 English speaking participants in order to measure linguistic differences. Findings reveal that respondents on both sides assign a different set of meanings to the same expressions according to their own beliefs. As a consequence, this subconscious process originates a language barrier specific to the abortion debate that disrupts successful communication between the parties.
