Abstract The need for sustainable waste management is crucial in order to achieve the environmental sustainability and achieve the circular economy objectives [64]. The objective of this paper is to understand the drivers of sustainable waste management performance, measured by Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 12.5.1 – the national recycling rate [68]. This study examines waste generation, recycling practices, and policy interventions across different national situations and identifies best practices and challenges towards achieving a sustainable waste management [53]. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of national-level recycling data with qualitative case studies and policy analysis [76]. The findings show that higher levels of waste reduction and efficiency can be reached by countries with advanced waste management framework, consistent regulatory enforcement and high levels of public involvement [25]. In contrast, a lack of infrastructure, financial incentives and public awareness inhibit progress in many areas. Essentially, this analysis is on the function of government policies, implementation of technologies and involvement of the private sector [22] in increasing the respective rates of recycling in waste. It calls for integrated waste management systems, greater investment in recycling infrastructure, and community-driven approaches to reduce waste [33]. Camelia et al. [28] and Schroeder et al. [29] show that by integrating SDG 12.5.1 and other relevant goals into their national policies, countries can thus improve their performance on waste management, reduce environmental degradation, and move towards a more sustainable and circular economy.
